The Issue

Living in low-income housing in Memphis, TN, has become more of a struggle than a relief due to the unsafe and unhealthy conditions many residents, including myself, are facing. I am currently living in one of these units, and the property owners have been dreading their feet on fixing the numerous issues present. My apartment has flooded three times, leading to hazardous conditions, and on one occasion, nearly causing an electrical fire. My children have fallen ill from the mold present in our home, and my newborn had to sleep in her carrier while my eldest endured a pain crisis induced by mold fumes. This is not the environment any family would want to raise their children in, and it is certainly not the environment anyone deserves to endure.

Memphis, known for its rich cultural heritage and community spirit, should no longer tolerate such negligence that disproportionately affects low-income families. The presence of mold and structural damages in housing units is not merely an inconvenience; it poses serious health risks, especially to children and adults with disabilities like my own family members.

We are demanding that property owners and city officials take immediate action to ensure all low-income housing units in Memphis are free of mold and structural damages. Implement regular inspections and enforce these standards strictly to not only identify violations but to swiftly address them as well.

Furthermore, we call for the establishment of a task force inclusive of local government, property managers, and tenant representatives to oversee the living conditions and rectify any reported hazards impacting renters. By creating a safer and more welcoming environment for low-income residents, we make a significant investment in the future of our city's resilience and prosperity.

We believe that everyone deserves a safe, healthy, and dignified place to live, regardless of their income. Please join us in calling for safer, affordable housing in Memphis by signing this petition.
