Demand police to allow Maccabi Tel Aviv fans to attend Aston Villa match
The Issue
As a supporters of Israel and educators against antisemitism in the UK, it is deeply troubling to witness the unjust decision to bar Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending the upcoming match against Aston Villa in Birmingham this November. Such measures not only undermine the spirit of sportsmanship but also raise profound questions about the UK police's capacity to ensure safety and security for all football fans.
The police's decision, reportedly based on their inability to guarantee the safety of Israeli fans, is deeply disappointing and alarming. Birmingham, being the second largest city in the UK and home to various multicultural communities, should be capable of ensuring a safe environment for everyone. It is imperative that the security services don't victim-blame but instead bolster their efforts to protect all supporters, regardless of their nationality or religion.
Football is a universal language that brings people together, transcending borders and bridging differences. Banning fans based on perceived threats diminishes this wonderful sport's innate ability to foster unity. Israeli and Jewish fans, like all others, deserve to attend matches with the assurance that their safety is a priority.
Once again, the police target the victim, not the aggressor.
We call upon the West Midlands Police and relevant authorities to reconsider this decision. Invest greater resources into security measures, collaborate closely with Israeli representatives, and demonstrate a commitment to protecting all fans equally. Football should never be used as a tool to divide or isolate any group based on their origins or beliefs.
Please stand with us in urging the police to reverse this ban. Sign this petition to allow Maccabi Tel Aviv fans to safely attend the Aston Villa match and demonstrate that the UK stands firm against discrimination and fear-mongering.
