The Issue

In Provo, Utah, police uncovered a brutal cockfighting operation where more than 50 roosters were found dead, and over 360 more were rescued from filthy, abusive conditions. Police also found drugs and syringes used to make the birds more aggressive, as well as razor blades, scorecards, and trophies that show this was not a random incident — it was an organized, premeditated animal torture ring.

Seventeen people were arrested. Some will face only misdemeanor charges.

Let that sink in. After all this, the dead birds in trash bags, the performance-enhancing drugs, the slow and painful deaths, most of the suspects are only facing class B and class A misdemeanors under Utah law.

Cockfighting is illegal in Utah, but the punishment does not match the cruelty. This case took place at a location previously reported for animal fighting back in 2019. Without stronger penalties, these violent, underground networks will continue to grow, and the animals will continue to suffer.

We are calling on the Utah Legislature, the Utah County Attorney’s Office, and local prosecutors to:

  • Upgrade game fowl fighting and aggravated animal cruelty to felony-level charges
  • Ensure those responsible for this operation face meaningful consequences
  • Create a statewide task force to investigate and shut down organized animal fighting rings
  • Provide funding and support to local shelters and agencies caring for seized animals

Animal cruelty is not a hobby. It is not a game. It is a crime, and Utah needs to treat it that way.

Sign this petition to demand stronger laws, real accountability, and an end to the torture of animals for sport.
