The Issue

The Geluksdal Residential Community in Brakpan, South Africa, has been battling with the persistent issue of mining dust pollution for years. This has become a dire situation, especially considering the vulnerable population in our community, which consists mostly of the elderly and young children. On windy days, clouds of dust descend upon our homes and streets, settling everywhere from our vehicles to our interiors, compromising the health and well-being of our residents.

This ongoing pollution violates Section 24 of the South African Constitution, which promises every person the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being. The reality in Geluksdal is starkly different. Our community is suffocated by mining dust, reducing air quality and posing severe health risks. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to dust pollution can lead to respiratory problems, especially in children and the elderly, who are most at risk.

We demand that the mine take immediate and effective recovery measures to curb this pollution. It is imperative for them to implement state-of-the-art dust control technologies and adhere to stricter environmental standards to ensure the safety and health of Geluksdal residents. Additionally, avenues for compensation must be established for the damage already endured by the community.

Every resident in Geluksdal deserves to breathe clean air and live in a safe and healthy environment, free from the hazards of unchecked industrial pollution. Please join us in calling on the mine to make necessary changes and uphold the rights guaranteed by our Constitution. Sign this petition to bring about positive change in our community.
