Demand Meta to Reform Their Dangerous Individuals and Organizations Policies

The Issue

I have been personally affected by the lax regulations of Meta's current Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policies. These policies need immediate attention and modification, as they fail to address the dangerous content being propagated under their umbrella. The rules set forth should concentrate on removing content that supports or praises menacing groups, rather than vaguely targeting individuals. I insist on changing the phrasing "dangerous individuals and organizations" to more accurate terms like "violent extremists" or "criminal organizations". Mislabelling and misrepresentation are contributing factors of this overarching issue.

Additionally, the way hate entities and hate-banned entities are handled needs to be revised. Currently, they are included under the Dangerous Individuals and Organizations category, which dilutes the seriousness of hate speech. This draws attention away from the pressing issue of hate speech online. These entities should be clearly addressed in its own category, under the 'Hate Speech Policy'. Assimilating these groups into the same category not only minimizes the severity of hate speech but also makes it harder for users and moderators to identify and combat it.

As a regular user, I have seen the damaging effects of these ineffective policies on our discourse and community. In 2019 alone, Facebook, now Meta, removed over 4 million pieces of content related to organized hate (transparency report, Facebook, 2019). Imagine the proliferation of dangerous narratives if it hadn’t been for the removal of this content. The number is alarming, showing a portrayal of what exists, and how much more could be hiding due to loopholes in the system.

To protect the users and reduce the spread of harm, Meta must reform their policy on dangerous organizations and individuals. We demand more precise definitions, stricter regulations, and a separate hate speech policy addressing hate entities. Sign this petition to push for a safer online environment on Meta platforms.
