The Issue

The representation of LGBTQ stories and characters in mainstream media is crucial for fostering understanding, acceptance, and pride within the community and among allies. Yet, despite the growing recognition of these stories' importance, they continue to be marginalized in cinemas in West Virginia, depriving them of the opportunity to reach a wider audience and to normalize LGBTQ stories too.

LGBTQ movies play a pivotal role in shining a light on the diverse experiences within the community, presenting narratives that many have longed to see reflected on the big screen. They challenge stereotypes and provide a platform for voices that are often unheard. Mainstream release of LGBTQ films in theatres nationwide is a fundamental step in promoting equality and inclusivity. “Girls Like Girls” was released nationwide today, June 19th, 2026- but is glaringly absent from any theatres in Harrison, Marion, and Monongalia counties.

The lack of representation of LGBTQ movies in theatres not only silences these vital stories but also contributes to a continued cycle of invisibility and misunderstanding. According to a GLAAD report, only 18.6% of major studio films included LGBTQ characters in 2020, highlighting the significant underrepresentation that persists.

Making these movies available widely would not only enrich our cultural tapestry but would also offer young LGBTQ individuals the chance to see their lives and experiences celebrated and validated on screen. Furthermore, it would educate broader audiences, fostering empathy and understanding in ways that few other mediums can achieve.

We are calling on local West Virginia Theatres to begin with one small step- showing “Girls Like Girls” which is directed by a hugely popular queer artist- and would in fact draw hundreds of patrons to your establishments!

Sign this petition to demand that theatre chains and film distributors take concrete steps toward inclusive representation by bringing LGBTQ stories to the big screen in theatres everywhere, ensuring that these powerful narratives reach the hearts and minds of all people.
