Vice President JD Vance is pushing the Department of Justice to open a fraud investigation into dozens of hospitals that provide gender-affirming care to transgender patients.

In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Vance cited a Department of Health and Human Services report and wrote that "some pediatric gender clinics and children's hospitals have apparently used misleading or even fraudulent diagnostic and billing codes to ensure that insurance companies will cover the procedures."

The push comes right after President Trump signed an executive order cutting off Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program funding for this care. Medical groups say the real goal isn't stopping fraud — it's shutting down care altogether.

American Academy of Pediatrics President Susan J. Kressly warned that "allowing the government to determine which patient groups deserve care sets a dangerous precedent, and children and families will bear the consequences."

Turning routine billing questions into a federal fraud probe puts politics in the middle of medical decisions that belong to doctors and families, not investigators.
