Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the U.S. government agency in charge of holding people while their immigration cases move through the courts. In Aurora, Colorado, ICE pays a private company called GEO Group to run one of these detention facilities. GEO Group doesn't work for the government directly — it holds people in custody under a paid contract with ICE.

There has been a case of tuberculosis (TB) — a contagious lung disease that spreads through the air — inside that facility. Colorado law requires facilities to quickly report cases like this to public health officials. But GEO Group's response fell short enough that Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser had to sue GEO Group in court just to get it to share full information and follow a state health order about the case.

Separately, a federal judge recently blocked a different Colorado law that would have required regular surprise inspections of this same facility. That ruling was only about inspections — it did not cancel Colorado's disease-reporting rules. GEO Group is still legally required to comply with the state's health order on the TB case.

The people detained inside, the guards and staff who work there, and everyone living near the facility have a right to know if they've been exposed to a contagious disease. Every day GEO Group delays is another day someone could be exposed without knowing it.

GEO Group and ICE should immediately release full information about the TB case and cooperate with Colorado's health order — no more court fights required to get basic answers.
