Teachers and Civil Servants in Zimbabwe experienced a drastic decrease in their salaries following adverse currency changes in October 2018. Their income went from USD 540 to a low of USD 30, forcing many into unavoidable debt. Presently, the tragedy is that around 70% of these employees earn less than 50% of their gazetted income. The rest of their meager wage is consumed to service debt acquired from the unjust transformation of their economic circumstances.

This injustice has pushed Zimbabwe's backbone, its civil servants and educators, into an unsustainable debt trap. Their story needs to reach the ears of those in power, and a long-lasting solution must be found. The Zimbabwean Government must assume the debts of these civil servants, offering relief to those who have carried the burden of economic instability and suffered through the consequence of ill-advised fiscal policies high-handedly implemented.
