Animal abuse is a serious crime that is often overlooked and under-punished. No animal, apart from humans, has the capacity to be evil. Abusing animals is a profound moral failing- one that is unforgivable and indicative of an individual who has abandoned the very essence of empathy, and therefore does not deserve any role, of any sort, in any civilized society. No person who has been found guilty of such a heinous crime should have the opportunity to freely roam our streets. Data suggests that individuals who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people (Humane Society). To deter such cruel behavior and to push for a more empathetic society, we must impose harsher penalties for convicted animal abusers, including punishments as high as life imprisonment. By doing so, we show that we recognize animal abuse for what it truly is - a serious, vile crime against not only those animals, but against humanity as a whole.
