My journey with the Pearson Test of English (PTE) has been fraught with challenges, as the AI-based scoring for the mainly speaking section consistently provides low scores, which also affects other modules as well. Despite countless hours of preparation, resources, and numerous attempts, not only I, but almost 8 out of 10 students I have connected with, are facing the same issue. It's disheartening and unfair to see our efforts not reflected in our scores, especially after rigorous practice with third-party apps that mirror the real exam experience.

What’s more troubling is the lack of feedback and transparency from PTE in explaining these low scores. Many students like me are left in the dark about what went wrong and how we can improve. This situation is not only frustrating but also impacts our future educational and career prospects, as these scores often determine university admissions and job opportunities globally. I have discussed this with numerous fellow test-takers, and there is a shared sentiment that the AI's evaluation criteria are unclear and possibly flawed.

According to a report by Times Higher Education, standardized test scores play a significant role in university admissions worldwide. However, when the scoring is inconsistent and opaque, it undermines our trust in these assessments. Students from diverse backgrounds—whose first language is not English—are particularly affected, as they might face additional biases inherent in AI systems, as highlighted by a study conducted by MIT Technology Review in 2022.

To remedy this, there are several actionable steps that Pearson should undertake. Firstly, increase transparency in the AI scoring model used for the speaking section, providing detailed performance breakdowns to test-takers. Secondly, Pearson should conduct and publish periodic reviews of their AI systems to ensure they are accurately assessing a wide range of English accents and speech patterns. Lastly, Pearson should offer workshops or online tutorials summarizing the criteria and tips for improving scores based on actual test data.
