Demand fair housing policies for first-time homebuyers

Demand fair housing policies for first-time homebuyers
The Issue
The dream of owning a first home is becoming seemingly unattainable for many families in Los Angeles, a reality that my own family has confronted firsthand. The rapidly increasing housing prices caused by large investors purchasing significant numbers of properties have created barriers for first-time homebuyers like us. It’s affecting the housing market itself. Many families watch as big investors edge them out in the housing market, securing homes, usually with cash, at prices they cannot compete with. This issue is far from isolated, it's a growing crisis affecting countless families across the region and beyond.
Well, let’s look at history and the facts: In Los Angeles, and in many other major cities across the U.S., the phenomenon of large investors purchasing extensive numbers of homes is contributing to unchecked gentrification. As these investors acquire more properties, rent prices soar, and families who have long been part of these communities are pushed out, unable to afford the escalating rents or home prices. This decreases the livelihood of these communities and increases displacement. The character and integrity of these neighborhoods, shaped by the residents who have lived there for generations, are being eroded.
To address this urgent issue, we must call upon our local leaders to enact protective policies for first-time homebuyers. One significant step would be to limit the number of properties that large investors can purchase. By capping how many properties they can acquire, we can curb the influence of large investors on housing prices, thereby affording more opportunities for local families to buy homes and sustain the neighborhoods they grew up in.
Additionally, implementing policies that provide financial support or incentives for first-time homebuyers can level the playing field. These could include expanded access to favorable mortgage conditions, grants, or tax breaks to encourage homeownership among traditionally marginalized groups.
The housing crisis is not just a statistic; it's a personal, human struggle many people in Los Angeles may face in their lifetime. By taking decisive action, we can help protect the fabric of our communities and ensure that homeownership is a viable goal for everybody.
Please join me in urging our local government to implement fair housing policies. Sign this petition to make our voices heard and demand change for the future of our neighborhoods.
