Demand Facebook to Re-evaluate Their Current Algorithms Harming Animal Rescue Efforts

The Issue

As a passionate advocate for animal rescue, I have observed firsthand how Facebook's recently implemented algorithms have had a devastating impact on efforts to save lives. These algorithms, which are supposed to filter out spam or cybersecurity threats, mistakenly flag posts created or shared to help animals in shelters and rescues worldwide. This unnecessary censorship severely curtails the reach of our life-saving messages.

As time ticks away for these at-risk animals, our urgent posts are taken down for review. A report from the ASPCA highlights the tenuous position many of these animals are in, with approximately 1.5 million shelter animals euthanized every year (ASPCA, 2019). For many of these animals, a single social media post can mean the difference between life and death. These are not spam; they are desperate pleas for help.

The actions of Facebook's misunderstood algorithms come at a great cost. The animals it inadvertently endangers could have had the chance to live full, loving lives if it were not for this system flaw. It is not just the animals that bear this burden – every censored post signifies a lost opportunity for a kindhearted individual to step in and rescue an animal from a cruel fate.

We call upon Facebook to re-evaluate and improve its current algorithm system, considering the grave impact it currently has on global animal rescue efforts. Doing so would protect the spirit of community and goodwill that social media platforms should foster. Please, don't let our calls for help turn into silence. Sign this petition to demand Facebook take immediate action to end this unnecessary loss of animal lives.
