I recently had an experience at Emory Health that left me feeling unsupported and disrespected as a trans woman. I was there for treatment, but instead of care, I was met with unprofessional and dismissive behavior. When I explained that my home treatment wasn't working, the response I received was simply that it was the only alternative to surgery. This attitude was not only dismissive but ignored my need for effective care.

Additionally, during my visit, I felt rushed and dismissed by the staff. When I offered to show a video instead of disrobing, I experienced sighs and eye-rolls, making me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Eventually, I was asked to leave the lobby, and without any explanation, I was discharged without treatment. To worsen matters, false claims were made that I refused evaluation, which was not true at all.

The most degrading part of my visit was the way my identity was handled. I requested the use of my chosen name, Suai, but found my full legal name used without any acknowledgment of my preference. This blatant disregard for my identity was deeply hurtful. Moreover, the security's intimidation tactics, including one officer spitting at me, further illustrated a significant lack of respect and professionalism.

This kind of treatment cannot continue. It's crucial for Emory Health to address these transphobic practices and ensure a supportive and respectful environment for all patients. Trans individuals deserve to be treated with dignity, have their identities respected, and receive the proper medical care without fear of discrimination. We demand immediate changes in their policies and practices to better accommodate and respect trans patients.
