The Issue

I hold a deep personal conviction that America stands as a symbol of justice, fairness, and respect for human rights. Yet, these values seem to be contradicted by the current situation of migrants being transferred to Guantanamo Bay and the plan for US citizens to be detained in an El Salvadorian prison. We believe in a civilized America, one that honors the constitution, respects human dignity, and abhors cruelty and unusual punishment. It is our duty as concerned citizens to become the voice of those silenced and forgotten.

This policy not only violates basic principles of human decency but it also contradicts international human rights laws. The United Nations Human Rights Council has reiterated the principle that detention of immigrants should be used as a last resort measure, stressing the dangerous physical and mental health impacts it can cause (Amnesty report 2019).

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the inhumane detention of migrants at Guantanamo Bay and the proposed plan to send migrants and American citizens to a prison in El Salvador. These actions violate fundamental human rights, contradict American values, and set a dangerous precedent for due process and justice.

Our Concerns:

1. Guantanamo Bay as a Detention Site for Migrants:

  • Guantanamo Bay has long been associated with indefinite detention and human rights violations. Using it as a migrant detention center risks further abuse and lack of legal protections for those seeking refuge.
  • Detaining migrants in a military facility outside of U.S. legal jurisdiction denies them the due process and fair treatment they deserve.

2. Sending Migrants and American Citizens to El Salvador:

  • The idea of sending individuals including American citizens to a foreign prison is unprecedented and alarming.
  • El Salvador’s prison system has been widely criticized for extreme overcrowding, lack of legal protections, and human rights abuses.
  • This plan disregards constitutional protections and exposes vulnerable individuals to cruel and degrading conditions.

Our Demands:

  • We are calling on the relevant authorities to halt the further transport of migrants to Guantanamo Bay and to return those already transferred to US soil.
  • A clear rejection of any proposal to send migrants or American citizens to El Salvador’s prison system.
  • Implementation of humane immigration policies that respect due process, uphold international human rights standards, and ensure fair treatment for all individuals.

The U.S. must uphold its commitment to justice, fairness, and human dignity. We call on our elected leaders to reject these dangerous policies and seek humane, lawful solutions to immigration challenges.
