The Issue

We are outraged and heartbroken over the tragic death of Ella, a Mexican gray wolf found dead in New Mexico on March 30th, 2025. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has stated that her cause of death is under investigation. Ella was a vital part of the effort to restore her critically endangered species to its natural habitat, and her loss is a devastating reminder of the urgent need to protect these magnificent creatures from harm.

Ella was named by schoolchildren and had recently made headlines for traveling north of Interstate 40 near Mount Taylor, an area rich in wildlife and historically home to Mexican gray wolves before their near-extinction due to human activity.

Mexican gray wolves are one of the most endangered mammals in North America, with only 162 individuals remaining in the wild in New Mexico, according to the latest census. The unlawful killing of any member of this species is an attack on decades of hard-fought conservation progress and an affront to the legal protections meant to safeguard their survival. Illegal killings remain the leading cause of death for these wolves, despite their status as a protected species under the Endangered Species Act.

We demand that federal and state authorities conduct a full and transparent investigation into Ella’s death, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Furthermore, we urge stronger enforcement of existing wildlife protection laws, increased penalties for illegal poaching, and greater investment in education and community initiatives to promote coexistence between humans and wolves.

Ella’s death cannot be in vain. By signing this petition, we call for immediate action to prevent future tragedies and to uphold the integrity of our nation’s commitment to wildlife conservation.

If you have any information regarding Ella’s death or the unlawful killing of any Mexican gray wolf, please contact USFWS special agents in Pinetop, Arizona, at (346) 254-0515, or the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Operation Game Thief at (800) 432-4263.
