Demand 24/7 Care in Australian Animal Quarantine (PEQ)

The issue

Thousands of pets are imported into Australia every year. Owners trust complete strangers at Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) to provide safe, basic care — but that trust is being broken.
30 days not seeing your pet is stressful and upsetting as it is, let alone not being cared for the correct way, and more so the care plan put in place from the rightful owners of those beloved animals.

In July 2024, our Cane Corso, Milo, nearly died from bloat (GDV) while in PEQ after only being in their facility for a few days. Which left us with a $14,000 vet bill the first day of arriving in Australia to start a new life.

Despite clear, written instructions about his feeding needs, equipment, and risks, PEQ:

🔴 Fed the wrong food with no explanation
🔴 Ignored our feeding guides and equipment requests
🔴 Failed to report weight loss
🔴 Left animals unattended for 15 hours overnight (4 PM – 7 AM)
🔴 Operates with only biosecurity and husbandry staff
🔴 Provided no timely response to serious      questions and concerns
🔴 Has no veterinarians on site

To think that a sick or dying animal is left alone in discomfort or pain for long, unsupervised hours is not only unfathomable — it is animal cruelty.

PEQ is a mandatory facility. There are no alternatives in Australia. As pet owners, we are given no choice, and yet we are expected to hand over our animals to a system that lacks basic care in the day and overnight.

PEQ Ignored our request on our pet declaration form.

We’re calling for immediate changes to PEQ:

✅  24/7 on-site staffing
✅  veterinary care availability on site
✅  Proper communication with pet owners
✅  Accountability for negligence
✅  Full transparency on food & care provided

‼️ The Department admitted to defective administration, but refuses to accept responsibility!!!

When I tried to share Milo’s story on a well-known pet owners’ platform to warn others and prevent this happening again, I was removed. Instead of support, I was silenced — and that only proves how important this petition is.

PEQ never once apologised for the trauma they caused Milo and us as a family.

Milo’s suffering should never have happened. Please help us ensure it doesn’t happen to any other animal again.
