DeFlockOhio
The Issue
The presence of privately owned surveillance systems, particularly the implementation of Flock Safety’s surveillance cameras, poses a significant threat to our constitutional rights and privacy. In recent months, numerous reports have emerged detailing how these systems have already violated both constitutional and Ohio state laws. This is deeply concerning for residents across Ohio, as well as for those advocating for privacy and civil liberties nationwide.
Flock Safety has deployed its surveillance cameras in numerous neighborhoods, capturing vehicle data of millions of drivers without their consent. These artificial intelligence-powered cameras are installed in collaboration with private entities and local government agencies under the guise of enhancing community safety and reducing crime. However, this surveillance comes at a significant cost to citizens' personal freedoms, potentially leading to overreach and misuse.
To date, there have been several reported instances where data collected by these cameras has been mishandled, leading to unwarranted invasions of privacy and incorrect assumptions about individuals’ activities. Such practices not only contravene existing legal frameworks but also set a dangerous precedent for the erosion of civil liberties if left unchecked.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other privacy advocacy organizations have already expressed concerns over the pervasive nature of these surveillance systems. They warn of the "surveillance creep" whereby our neighborhoods slowly evolve into spaces of constant monitoring, making us wary of our movements and actions.
Furthermore, the use of these cameras raises substantial ethical questions about mass surveillance. It disproportionately impacts marginalized communities and contributes to systemic biases within law enforcement practices.
We call on Ohio state legislators and local government officials to take immediate action. It is imperative to reevaluate and enforce strict regulations on the deployment and usage of Flock Safety’s surveillance systems to protect our constitutional rights to privacy. We urge lawmakers to demand increased transparency from Flock Safety, ensuring that any form of surveillance technology operates within the bounds of the law.
Moreover, a public discourse on the implications of private surveillance is essential. Communities need to engage in dialogues weighing the purported benefits against the profound costs to individual freedom and privacy.
Our fundamental rights are at stake. Let’s preserve our privacy and protect our liberties. Please sign this petition to halt the unethical practice of privately owned surveillance by Flock and safeguard our communities in Ohio from unlawful monitoring.
