Deflock Union City
The Issue
Flock cameras are automated surveillance systems that continuously collect and store information about people in the community, regardless of whether they are suspected of a crime or not. Every time someone passes a Flock camera, whether driving a personal vehicle, using a rental car, riding with someone else, or simply walking nearby, data is captured and added to a growing database.
The biggest concern is not just that data is being collected, but that the public has little knowledge or control over where that information goes. Residents are often unaware of who can access the data, how it may be shared, how long it is stored, or how it could be used in the future. Once personal information is collected and stored, there is no guarantee it will remain secure.
No one should have their daily movements monitored simply for driving on public roads. Public safety is important, but it should not come at the cost of everyone's privacy. The use of Flock cameras normalizes mass surveillance and puts personal information at risk of misuse. This petition calls for the immediate removal of Flock cameras and the adoption of public safety measures that do not rely on tracking citizens.
