Decommission Callan Park illegal landfill

Decommission Callan Park illegal landfill

The issue

This 4000 m2 demolition dump has been idle, abandoned for decades, covered by all types of noxious weeds that relentlessly spread over the park, Balmain peninsula, Inner West area and beyond.

Greater Sydney Parklands (GSP) manages Callan Park and has confirmed there are no plans for the landfill.

NSW EPA legislation demands landfills no longer in use must be decommissioned, meaning reinstated, reclaimed.

What to do when government does not obey their own laws. EPA ref/no/20131.

Of great concern is Sinensis Celtis, Identified as a weed of national significance, a tree that grows fast up to 15 meters that has spread from the landfill like wildfire all over Sydney propagated by birds that eat their seeds. Our native trees do not stand a chance against this invader.
