Declare Saint George's Day 2026 a Bank Holiday

Declare Saint George's Day 2026 a Bank Holiday
The Issue
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland proudly celebrate their patron saints with a statutory day off work, embracing and honoring their rich cultural heritage. Yet, in England, we are left without a national holiday to commemorate our own patron saint, Saint George. It is time for this oversight to be corrected and for the people of England to enjoy a dedicated day of celebration.
Saint George's Day, observed on April 23rd, has long been a symbol of English valor and tradition. Despite overlapping acknowledgments through smaller ceremonies and gatherings, it’s only right that we make this day more significant by recognizing it as a bank holiday. This change will not only enhance national pride but also bring communities together, encouraging participation in local events and cultural festivities honoring our history and identity.
A bank holiday would contribute positively to the economy by encouraging travel and tourism, and giving families the opportunity to come together to celebrate. The recognition of such a day would demonstrate respect for the English cultural identity, put us on par with our neighboring nations, and offer a meaningful opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the values and traditions that unite us all as a country.
It is imperative for HM Government to take this request seriously and move forward with legislating Saint George's Day for the year 2026 as a bank holiday. The time to act is now, to ensure that every Englishman and woman can participate in honoring England's patron saint in the way that our neighbors do.
By signing this petition, you are expressing your support for this cause and helping to solidify a future where Saint George's Day is recognized as a national holiday, accessible and celebrated by all. Please join us in this effort to bring about a long-overdue change.
