The Issue

For many Muslim students and their families, Eid is a significant religious and cultural event that marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, reflection, and community. However, in schools governed by the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), Eid often clashes with regular school days, putting students and their families in a dilemma—having to choose between their education and their faith.

Navigating this challenging decision is not just about missing a day of school; it is about acknowledging and respecting the diverse cultures and religions that make up our vibrant community. Forcing students to choose between their education and their religious obligations hinders the promotion of inclusivity and equity that our educational institutions strive to uphold.

While other religious occasions receive a school holiday, it is pertinent that the same consideration be extended to Muslim students. By declaring Eid a school holiday, CBE would ensure that all students are afforded the opportunity to celebrate their important cultural and religious occasions without any penalties.

According to a 2011 National Household Survey, Muslims make up a significant portion of Canada's population, and their numbers have continued to grow. Recognizing their religious celebrations through school holidays would not only honor existing diversity but also promote understanding and acceptance across different cultures.

This initiative would be a major step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students, reflecting the values of respect and diversity that we cherish. Let us come together to advocate for this change, ensuring every student feels valued and respected regardless of their background or faith.

Sign this petition to urge the Calgary Board of Education to declare Eid a school holiday for the betterment of our multicultural community.
