Save the Foxes - Do NOT repeal the Hunting Act of 2004
The Issue
The Hunting Act 2004 is an act of Parliament which bans the hunting of wild mammals (this includes foxes, deer, hares and mink) with dogs in England and Wales.
After Cameron said that he believed in the "freedom to hunt" and wished to repeal this law, I immediately researched into various campaigns and petitions to prevent the government from doing so. I was unable to find a recent petition and so I decided to create my own, believing that we need as much pressure against the government on this as possible.
It is not our 'freedom' to hunt innocent, beautiful creatures for twisted entertainment. We have come so far in terms of animal welfare and clearly have a long way to go and this would be a huge regression. It is commonly misconceived that the hounds kill the foxes in a 'humane' way - a quick nip to the back of the neck... virtually painless. This is incorrect. The dogs rip the foxes apart. How is this humane? How is this entertaining? How can this be legal?
The argument that fox hunting is a form of pest control is a weak one. Firstly, foxes are responsible for only 1%-3% of livestock and game loss. And even if foxes were supposed pests, fox hunting is only responsible for 6.25% of overall mortality for foxes. What's more is that foxes actually aid the countryside in killing rabbits, which are responsible for £100m of agricultural damage.
The belief in this 'sport' or 'freedom' as being something worthy of legalisation by one of the most powerful men out there is worrying. Foxes have no voice and so it is our obligation to speak for them. We cannot let innocent animals die for a twisted form of sport under the illusion of it being for 'pest control'. We need to start now and save the ban before it's too late.
