Poor drafting.

This act was made after shock images and incriminating headlines directed blame upon the animals that are now classified as dangerous. The usually elongated process occured in a matter of weeks. The rush meant that it was poorly drafted and essential steps were skipped. Usually they are required to seek out professional guidance but they didn't. They based their knowledge on their limited experience and the biased media opinion of the time.

Bluntly:  They created this through peer pressure and with no/little knowledge.

Misunderstood breeds.

The Dogo Argentino. Banned.

This dog breed was bred, by humans, to hunt wild boar. However, this breed is a character that was designed to be sociable with its pack. In other words it is dog friendly and human friendly. It's eager to please and an all rounded gorgeous dog. But this act has decided that  is far too dangerous. Because it has power. So? A Rottweiler has power, even an English Springer spaniel could easily summon huge amounts of power. The family Staffordshire bull terrier has lock jaw. Yet all of these breeds are legal. In fact German shepherds, golden retrievers and poodles have staggeringly high bite tolls. Still legal. Why? Because they are popular breeds and people (including those who designed this act) know that they are the exceptions of the usually docile loving breeds. A luxury a pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo argentino or fila brazilio just dont have.

Death toll.

Sometimes, your family dog is suddenly taken. Families cross the UK adopt or purchase their 'staffy' pups and bring them into their homes. They become a part of the family. You may have children that bond with these immensely loyal and loving breeds. Then their pet is stolen. You may be told it is a pit bull and needs to be euthanized. Your family pet will be executed.

That is a story shared by many families across our 'United' kingdom.

In fact well over one hundred dogs have been seized. Some, simply, because of its breed.

If this happened in the human world that would be discrimination, let alone the murder that followed for many.

What now?

It is my belief we can save the beautiful breeds that deserve to continue. Bring in experts. Assess the true nature of these breeds. If you still consider them dangerous do not ban them. Educate people on them. They are the dangers! Consider a licence for 'Dangerous' dogs. Where people can learn how to handle these dogs and socialize them. If they pass then they get a licence. Add in restrictions if you must. But with killing these breeds you're killing cultures! These dogs deserve lives and families. And families deserve to keep their dogs.

An experts idea:

Cesar Millan took time away from his highly successful dog oriented career to talk about the 'most dangerous dogs'. He found problem cases and solved them. As an owner of Pitt bulls he talks about the reality of the breed. He talks about the myth of a bad breed and the realities of fashionable dogs being turned dangerous by bad owners.  Then he asked professionals what they thought. One vet said about how he'd never been bitten by a 'Dangerous dog' but multiple times by smaller dogs.
