The world needs to stop ignoring Mental Health.

The Issue

Dear Leaders of the world, My name is Kayleigh Ruthven, I am 27 years old and live in Nottingham in the UK. Firstly I would like to pay my respects to all of the lives lost throughout history around the world as a result of war. I also would like to send my love and hope for a brighter future for the families who have had their loved ones snatched away from them. What happened in Paris last week can only be described as deeply sickening. I believe that it is the final wake up call that the world and its people need. As a world full of people we can not keep covering things up, we can not keep ignoring the terrible things that are happening around us, if bad things do not affect you directly, then not being bothered and carrying on with life seems to be the worlds approach at the moment. We have to stand tall, we have to each be held accountable for the world that we live in. We have to be brave and we have to tackle our problems face on. Instead of just hoping and praying that they will just go away because they wont. Mental Health is one of the worlds biggest problems, Mental health affects 1 in 4 people throughout their life, and millions live with life-span conditions which means that they will be mentally impaired for the rest of their lives. So why as a world are we yet to provide hope of better services and support around the globe? I understand that there are many wonderful services around the world already trying their best to improve the lives of those living with Mental Health illness but it is not enough. I have tried to have a strong presence on social media here in the UK in the last 5 weeks. I have been trying to raise awareness of ADHD in the UK, Until I went to write a quote about equality and I woke up and realised I was discriminating against others around the world by only sharing my awareness with UK. So here I am sharing this with you all. 17 months ago in complete desperation I searched the internet to find an explanation for my youngest sons behaviour, it was then that I realised I have ADHD. I have been to school, I have been to college and I have been to university and still until that night I knew nothing about ADHD. ADHD has many very problematic symptoms, that if managed and treated correctly can be reduced significantly. The wonderful internet that you provide for us has masses of information about ADHD readily available for people to read, but because of the media and a few uneducated opinions society now question whether ADHD is real. I can assure you that it is real all you have to do is take a look at my life to see the damage and destruction that ADHD can cause. Now I am one persistent lady, so being shoved from service to service and being treated with nothing but discrimination did not deter me, but how many other people globally don't have my strength and a give up on their hope of help because we as a world turn our backs to mental health. Out of sight, Out of Mind. You may think mental health doesn't affect you right now but I bet my last pound that you know someone who has suffered with mental health and if you have never experienced it yet who is to say that it wont affect you in the future. Mental Health does not discriminate. Mental health impacts on society as a whole and the sooner that we do something to help people with mental illnesses the quicker we can reduce those impacts. I think that it is the appropriate time to say I'd like to pay my respects to all those who have been hurt or lost their lives due to mental illness. Suicide is on the rise, atrocious terrorist attacks, murders and horrific acts of violence. I believe the people that die or hurt another human being in anyone of these ways is suffering from mental illness. If our brains are not working properly, life is going to be dysfunctional. We cannot afford to keep ignoring mental health. We as the general public cannot be excused either because you too turn your backs. Think back to the first and second world war our people, our countries and the whole world stood together, supported each other and showed care and compassion to others. It is because of that unity that past generations were victorious. We need to become united again. As the general public we can point our fingers at these world leaders all we like but ask yourself this, what are you doing as a member of the worlds society to make the future and happier and safer place? "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." This Is exactly what we need to do. We need to stop leading with negativity and start projecting love and hope around the world, it is the only way. In 5 weeks I have managed to get the attention of over 1000 people who have all faced discrimination in some way, be that the lack of support or just the complete lack of ignorance. Every single one of the people that I have spoken to has a story to tell and they too believe in the change of mental health services around the world. If such a small group of people believe, I have no doubt that there are millions around the world who share the same beliefs and I will try and bring those people together.  I understand that you are all extremely busy people and that the world has some seriously pressing issues to tackle, I am not asking for your time or your money only your support, love and hope. Allow me to guide people into 2016 positively with the hope for the future. If the worlds society wants to see a changes globally. We must stick together, support each other and show care and compassion. Richard Branson Tweeted tonight, "by treating people with compassion it gives people the chance to rebuild their lives. Doesn't everybody deserve that?" I am Just a little lady from the UK but my experience with mental health and mental health services throughout my life and the tales of terror I have read and heard personally have all left me with the understanding that the worlds approach to mental health is not working. I know I am not alone in these views. We are failing man kind by ignoring mental health and together as a world society we can stand together and make the all important changes that are needed to make a difference to our world. Please believe, please have hope for a better future and as a world lets stand arm in arm and spread happiness and love. If we can change the future of mental health as a world think of what else we are capable of when we all stand together? Share hope and sign this petition if you want to see changes around the world, instead of just waiting for them to happen. Be the difference. Thank you for listening.   Yours sincerely Kayleigh Ruthven
