The issue

On 26 June 2024, Darebin Council became the first city in Australia to formally endorse the Plant Based Treaty to address food emissions.

Darebin was also the first city worldwide to declare a climate emergency in 2016 and take the urgent action needed to address it. Reducing emissions from food is a key part of addressing the climate emergency.

When Darebin endorsed the Plant Based Treaty, the recommendation from staff said, "Darebin Council has declared a climate emergency and committed to taking action to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Plant Based Treaty (Treaty) could represent public acknowledgment that food production and consumption are key drivers of the climate emergency.”

Just nine months later, the newly elected Council is attempting to overturn this decision and will vote on whether to continue to endorse the Plant Based Treaty on Monday night 24 March 2025.

If you care about the climate emergency, sustainability and reducing emissions from food, please sign this petition for Darebin to continue to endorse the Plant Based Treaty.
