Please do not sell the Barrow-in-Furness Grammar Schools for redevelopment.
The Issue
It is understood by the people who signed this petition that it is the intention of CCC to sell the buildings which formed the Grammar Schools situated in Park Drive, Barrow-in-Furness to a developer (probably to demolish & build new houses).
These two schools Barrow Grammar School for Boys, opened 1930 and the Barrow Grammar School for Girls, opened 1932 have been part of our Community and many thousands of pupils have been educated there with more than encouraging results. The schools’ curriculum has been instructive in producing fine young men and woman into business & commerce, such as accountants, solicitors, barristers, indeed good solid members of our community.
We believe the existence of the Grammar Schools has been of a prolific character. We would like the Council to review their decision to sell off these schools with the eventuality of the ‘wrecking ball’. Far too many buildings, for one reason or another have been demolished without prior consultation of the electorate of Barrow and Furness.
In proposing an alternate use for the buildings, at this point in time, may we suggest that a volunteer group meet to suggest ideas
We urge the Council to reconsider selling off this land for subsequent development and probable demolition. In the history of Barrow dating back to Ramsden’s vision, there have been far too many organisations such as schools, churches & buildings of character demolished and gone forever.
We believe that once these buildings are sold & demolished, it removes forever, the architectural style and the effort these buildings were designed in the first instance.
