Cruelty against animal - Kicchu Haisoda
The Issue
As we all know, Sankranti is not only about humans, but also about cattle that have always played an important role in farming. In many regions of India, the farmers involve their cattle in rituals.
One such ritual in Karnataka is known as Kichchu Haisodu (Kichchu Haayisuvudu). During this ritual bulls are made to run across burning stacks of hay, first. After the bulls, other cattle like cows, buffaloes and sheep including their calves are made to walk across whatever is left of the burning haystack. The owners of the cattle cross the fire along with the animals due to which the locals say this ritual is not harmful to the animals in any sense in order to keep continuing this ritual. Though, the animals and men take not more than 5 to 10 seconds to cross the fire, animals just like human beings are instinctually afraid of fire. This brief contact with the flames will harm their skin, feet or hooves. Such contact with fire will also cause distress in the animals and will also cause direct and indirect impact to these creatures. Some of these bulls are well decorated with flowers and balloons which might catch fire and get burnt during the crossing.
The practice of Kichchu Haayisuvudu, has few theories as to why this practice originated. One such theory is that the fire and smoke helps clean the under body of the animals of ticks and fleas. Another reason for making the animals jump over fire is to make them fearless, in the event of a fire accident near their sheds. Whatever the reason, the symbolic relationship between, the Sun God (Surya) and fire is unmistakable. By acknowledging the contribution of not just the God in the heaven above, but also the mute animal which toils in the field, our traditions have always been about reverence. As per the law, these theories are illogical and illegal where in the name of culture and heritage, animals are being abused and are exploited.
Therefore it's our duty to raise voice against those who exploit the rights of animals in the name of culture and its practice and harm them in various manners. In order to stop his form of Cruelty against animal please sign this petition.
