Create neurodivergent spaces in all public areas

The Issue

Having lived with neurodivergence my entire life, I understand the unique challenges that come with navigating a world designed for neurotypical individuals. This is not just my reality but the reality of millions who are neurodivergent. The sensory overload in crowded places, the noise, the chaos - it can all be overwhelming and debilitating.

Many public spaces, be it shopping centers, libraries, parks, or transport hubs, currently do not cater to the needs of neurodivergent individuals. This lack of consideration not only limits our access but also perpetuates exclusion, hampering our ability to feel comfortable and welcomed.

The solution is straightforward: establish designated neurodivergent-friendly areas within all public spaces. These areas would offer sensory calm zones, quiet areas, and clear signage for easy navigation, among other features. For instance, shopping malls could incorporate sensory-friendly lounges where individuals can take a break if they feel overstimulated. Public transportation hubs could have clearly marked quiet carriages or zones where sensory input is minimized.

Statistics show that approximately 15–20% of the world's population is neurodivergent. In a country like the United States, this equates to millions of individuals who face daily challenges because public areas fail to meet their needs. It's essential that inclusivity becomes a priority in the design and operation of these spaces. By making public places more accommodating, we can ensure that neurodivergent individuals are provided the same opportunities and experiences as everyone else.

I urge the British government to consider the needs of neurodivergent individuals in their designs and policies. It's time to promote inclusivity by creating safe and accommodating environments for all.

Please lend your voice to this cause and help make public spaces inclusive for everyone. Sign this petition to support the creation of neurodivergent-friendly areas in public places.
