The Issue

As a young person striving to carve out an independent life, I am deeply aware of how the current job market presents profound challenges for people like me. Despite working tirelessly towards obtaining a degree, many young people, myself included, find ourselves trapped in a cycle where securing meaningful employment proves near impossible without experience. Meanwhile, gaining experience remains out of reach due to the same demanding job prerequisites.

In cities and towns across our country, young people are facing incredible mental and financial strain, grappling with the harsh reality that they are often perceived as less valuable in the workplace due to lack of experience. This perception leads to a feeling of helplessness after years of diligent study, as opportunities remain closed to this eager and talented pool of fresh graduates.

Here’s what can be done to address this issue effectively:

1. Expand Internship Programs: Encourage businesses to create more comprehensive internship programs, targeting recent graduates, to provide hands-on experience that bridges the gap between academics and professional life.

2. Incentivise Hiring of Graduates: Governments can offer tax breaks or grants to employers who demonstrate a commitment to hiring young people and investing in their development.

3. Promote Entry-Level Opportunities: Employers should be encouraged to open more genuine entry-level positions which do not demand extensive prior experience, focusing instead on training and growing the potential of young hires.

4. Support Mentorship Programs: Support initiatives that connect industry veterans with young professionals, offering guidance, building networks, and sharing knowledge.

We all have a role to play in empowering the next generation to thrive, contribute, and innovate without the shadow of missed opportunities hanging over them. Sign this petition to urge local businesses, educational institutions, and governmental bodies to implement these changes, making employment accessible, fair, and promising for all youth.
