Create Federal Guidelines to Protect Communities from Data Center Harm

Create Federal Guidelines to Protect Communities from Data Center Harm
The Issue
Data centers are fueling the rise of artificial intelligence — but across the U.S., they’re draining energy grids, raising electricity bills, and taking over neighborhoods without public consent.
A new report shows that nearly $100 billion in data center projects were delayed or blocked this year alone due to growing grassroots opposition in 17 states.
Why? Because local residents are tired of being ignored. These massive facilities often operate 24/7, consume vast amounts of electricity and water, increase noise and pollution, and leave local taxpayers footing the bill for infrastructure upgrades.
While tech companies chase profits, too many communities are left to deal with the consequences — without federal protections, national standards, or any meaningful say.
We’re calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Energy (DOE), and Congress to take urgent action by:
- Creating national guidelines for data center siting to prevent harm to homes, schools, and green spaces
- Mandating transparent environmental and infrastructure impact reviews
- Requiring public input before federal funds or incentives are granted
- Ensuring tech companies cover the full cost of their energy and water use.
This isn’t about stopping innovation — it’s about responsible growth. Data centers are here to stay, but so are the people who live near them. We need guardrails to ensure these developments don’t overwhelm our communities or bankrupt our utilities.
Communities in red and blue states alike — from Georgia to Indiana to Virginia — are already organizing. Now it’s time for federal leaders to catch up.
Add your name if you believe technology shouldn’t come at the cost of public health, fairness, and local control. Let’s build a future where both AI and our neighborhoods can thrive.
