The Issue
Four years ago, my life was irrevocably changed. As a survivor of rape, I faced an uphill battle not only to heal but also to find the justice I so rightly deserved. Unfortunately, my case, like so many others, did not lead to a prosecution due to a lack of evidence. When the bail conditions protecting me expired, I was left vulnerable and exposed, without the protection I desperately needed from unwanted contact with the person who had already caused me unimaginable harm.
In the wake of these developments, I became severely depressed and anxious. I developed agoraphobia, constantly fearing the possibility of encountering him or his family in public, where I might be confronted or accused of fabricating my experience. To many people, the absence of a court case suggests nothing happened, but my fears and anxieties are real and valid.
No survivor of sexual assault should be left feeling unprotected once bail conditions end. It's essential for the law to recognize the ongoing needs of survivors by creating a special protection order. This order would empower police forces across the UK to offer indefinite protection from any unwanted contact upon the conclusion of criminal investigations that do not result in prosecution.
Official figures for England and Wales show only a small proportion of recorded offences result in a conviction . This leaves countless survivors without the justice and protection they need ,yet the psychological and emotional scars often last a lifetime. Survivors deserve access to a legal tool that ensures their safety and peace of mind when the justice system falls short.
By implementing indefinite protection orders, we can give hope to countless individuals silently enduring the aftermath of their trauma. This actionable change would allow survivors to begin healing without the paralyzing fear of unexpected encounters with their assailants.
