Create Alternate Route or Expand Trans Canada Highway Through Malahat and Goldstream

Create Alternate Route or Expand Trans Canada Highway Through Malahat and Goldstream
The Issue
Living on the Malahat and working in Victoria, I experience firsthand the daily congestion and safety concerns on the Trans Canada Highway through the steep and winding terrain of Goldstream Park. This vital route, which is the main artery for Vancouver Island, often causes significant delays due to accidents, weather conditions, or simple overuse. Commuters, like myself, can spend hours more than necessary in traffic each week, impacting both personal life and professional commitments.
For years, residents of Malahat and the surrounding areas have voiced their concerns about the inadequacy of the current highway infrastructure. Yet, traffic continues to grow as the population increases and more people rely on this road to connect northern Vancouver Island with the southern areas, including Victoria.
A dual-lane highway or an alternate route would not only alleviate daily stresses but also significantly reduce travel times, improve fuel efficiency, and most importantly, enhance safety for all road users. According to ICBC, the Malahat recorded an average of over 40 collisions annually, many of which involved serious injuries. A widened highway or an additional route could reduce these numbers significantly.
The economic implications are notable as well. Reduced travel time and enhanced safety would benefit businesses by ensuring timely deliveries and accessibility, which are crucial for economic growth on the island. The preservation of local tourism, which relies heavily on reliable and safe transportation, would also profit from such improvements.
Furthermore, addressing this transportation bottleneck aligns with broader environmental and economic policies aimed at promoting sustainable regional development.
Now is the time for action. Urge local authorities and the provincial government to prioritize the expansion of the Trans Canada Highway or the development of an alternative route to ensure safety and efficiency for all Vancouver Island residents and visitors. Please sign this petition to show your support for this necessary infrastructure improvement.
