Create a Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) certificate program

Create a Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) certificate program
The Issue
Latin American Studies at the University of Alberta is under threat of disappearing, a loss that would be deeply felt by both current and future students, as well as the cultural and academic landscape of our community. As someone who has experienced firsthand the rich diversity and profound insights that Latin American Studies offers, I am compelled to advocate for the preservation and enhancement of this vital field.
Establishing a Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) certificate program at the University of Alberta would not only preserve but also revitalize this important area of study. Such a program would offer career advantages and open doors to numerous internship, grant, and scholarship opportunities, creating a more inclusive and comprehensive educational experience. It would also place the University of Alberta on par with other leading institutions that offer majors, minors, or focused programs in Latin American and Caribbean Studies—programs that meaningfully complement a wide range of degrees and enrich students’ academic trajectories.
Currently, the lack of a structured program limits students’ access to resources and specialized courses that are uniquely relevant to Latin American and Caribbean Studies. This hinders both personal and professional growth. Implementing a certificate program would signal the university’s commitment to fostering diversity and ensuring that students can engage deeply with Latin America and the Caribbean’s diverse cultures, histories, and contributions to the world.
Moreover, universities across North America are recognizing the importance of area studies programs. By taking this action, the University of Alberta would join the ranks of institutions that prioritize global understanding and cultural exchange. These programs not only strengthen academic offerings but also complement students’ primary fields of study, equipping them with critical cultural, linguistic, and political competencies needed for global careers and civic engagement.
We urge the University of Alberta’s administration to take immediate steps toward establishing a Latin American and Caribbean Studies certificate program. This initiative will not only preserve existing courses but also expand upon them, demonstrating a commitment to enriching the educational opportunities available to all students.
Please sign this petition if you believe in the importance of preserving and promoting Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Alberta. Together, we can ensure that this critical field of study receives the recognition and support it deserves.
