Subject: Proposal to Establish an Exploratory Committee for CANZUK (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom) Cooperation

We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, respectfully request that the Government of Canada establish an exploratory committee to examine the potential benefits, challenges, and feasibility of deepening ties between Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom through a CANZUK agreement.

Background
The CANZUK proposal envisions closer cooperation among Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom in areas such as trade, mobility, defense, and foreign policy. These four nations share deep historical, cultural, and institutional ties, as well as common values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Strengthening collaboration among these countries could yield significant economic, social, and strategic benefits for all parties involved.

Rationale for an Exploratory Committee:

1. Economic Opportunities: A CANZUK agreement could facilitate increased trade and investment among the four nations, creating jobs and boosting economic growth. An exploratory committee would assess the potential for reducing trade barriers and enhancing economic cooperation.
2. Labour Mobility: Enhanced mobility for citizens of CANZUK countries could allow for greater opportunities for work, study, and travel, fostering cultural exchange and addressing skills shortages in key sectors.
3. Geopolitical Strength: In an increasingly uncertain global environment, closer alignment among CANZUK nations could strengthen their collective influence on the world stage, particularly in areas such as climate change, security, and global governance.
4. Public Interest: There is growing public support for CANZUK among citizens of all four nations. An exploratory committee would provide a transparent and evidence-based assessment of the proposal, ensuring that any future steps reflect the interests and aspirations of Canadians.

Proposed Mandate for the Committee:
The exploratory committee should be tasked with:

  • Conducting a comprehensive analysis of the potential benefits and challenges of a CANZUK agreement.
    - Engaging with stakeholders, including businesses, civil society, and the public, to gather input and perspectives.
    - Examining existing agreements and frameworks (e.g., trade agreements, mobility programs) to identify opportunities for enhanced cooperation.
    - Providing recommendations on whether Canada should pursue formal negotiations with Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Conclusion: The establishment of a CANZUK exploratory committee represents a proactive step toward strengthening the relationship between these four nations. It would allow us to take a more proactive role in tackling our global challenges and decrease our dependency on other indefinitely
