The Issue

I see myself as a custodian of my beloved Victorian cottage, entrusted not just with its care today but with its preservation for future generations. This charming home holds immense personal value, and I am committed to ensuring it survives long after I am gone. However, like many older homes across the UK, it faces a pressing challenge: its energy consumption is unsustainable for the environment and costly for my budget. Retrofitting to improve energy efficiency is essential, yet the expense is currently beyond my reach.

The UK housing market comprises a substantial number of older properties like mine that could greatly benefit from an upgrade in energy efficiency. Retrofitting these homes to meet modern ecological standards not only aids in fighting climate change but also dramatically cuts down on energy costs, providing long-term economic relief to homeowners.

To address this issue, I am proposing the establishment of a 100-year property loan scheme limited to energy-efficiency upgrades. This loan would be directly tied to the property deeds, allowing it to extend far beyond the typical mortgage duration. Importantly, it would carry an incredibly low interest rate of just 0.5%, making repayments manageable. Homeowners would be able to finance ecological insulation and upgrades to Passive House standards, creating healthier, more sustainable living environments without being financially strained.

The cost savings on energy bills would offset the monthly repayments, rendering it a self-sustaining financial model. Imagine the impact: entire neighbourhoods across the UK becoming energy-efficient, reducing our carbon footprint, and supporting national commitments to climate targets.

This initiative would also spur job creation within the green economy, as demand for renewable energy solutions and skilled labour in retrofitting rises. In turn, this diversification of the job market works to revitalise sectors that have waned.

I urge you to support this initiative by signing this petition. Let's push for practical, sustainable change that benefits both our environment and our economy. Join me in transforming the UK housing landscape, one energy-efficient home at a time.
