The issue

We ask the Maribyrnong City Council to paint at least two zebra pedestrian crossings in the vicinity of Church Street Children's Centre. One on Church Street and another on Essex Street, near the corner of Essex / Church and Blandford Streets. We need safe ways to get our children to school and child care, without driving them in our cars. Zebra pedestrian crossings will also make the area more inclusive, by making it easier for everyone, particularly persons with impaired mobility, to cross these busy streets.

In 2011, Maribyrnong Council’s Integrated Transport Strategy vision was that “Maribyrnong will be a city where it is possible for people to walk and cycle more often, and catch public transport with ease, thus relieving congestion on the road network...”

As parents, children and residents who enjoy walking or cycling, we fully subscribe to this vision. We like and want to walk and cycle with our children to school and childcare. We recognise this is both a healthy practice and an environmentally friendly way of starting the day. We like to walk and see this as a good community building practice. The more persons walking in the street, the more vibrant and safer Maidstone and West Footscray are!

Zebra crossings, by prioritising safe crossing for pedestrians, are an essential measure to promote walking and cycling. These are inexpensive to install. Maribyrnong Council is not doing nearly enough to ensure our and our children’s safety as pedestrians. 10 years after the Transport Strategy was released, we count one pedestrian zebra crossing in the whole area of Maidstone and West Footscray between Ashley Street / Barkly Street / Gordon Av. / Ballarat Road!

Crossing busy roads is one of our major concerns while taking our children to Church Street Children's Centre. It is also very hard for the Educators to safely take children to nearby ovals and parks for excursions. More prioritised safe pedestrian crossings are essential in this area, if we are to achieve the Maribyrnong vision above. We count on you to ensure the vision for a more walkable Maribyrnong is achieved. Maribyrnong Council needs to do more, Maribyrnong Children deserve it!
