Correct the misnaming of the Persian language on BBC Dari

Correct the misnaming of the Persian language on BBC Dari
The Issue
We, the 231 signatories—professors, poets, writers, and cultural figures from Afghanistan—object to the BBC naming its Afghanistan-focused platform “BBC Dari.” This incorrect labeling not only distorts historical and cultural reality but deeply affects the identity of millions of Persian speakers in Afghanistan. The language known globally as Persian must be recognized accurately to respect the cultural and linguistic heritage of our community.
Historically, the Persian language has been an integral part of the fabric of Afghanistan, representing a rich literary and cultural tradition that dates back centuries. It serves as a cornerstone of our identity, connecting us to a shared past and fostering a sense of unity amidst diverse ethnic backgrounds. By naming their platform 'BBC Dari', the BBC undermines this vital connection, misrepresenting the language millions of us call our mother tongue.
This misnaming becomes even more concerning in light of current political climates. The Taliban's discriminatory policies have included the removal of "Farsi" from official documents, promoting 'Dari' as the only acceptable term and thus contributing to divisive narratives. By choosing to use the term 'Dari', the BBC inadvertently aligns itself with this divisive propaganda, further marginalizing Persian speakers who are already facing cultural erosion under repressive governance.
The BBC has a unique platform and influence, especially in regions like Afghanistan where independent news sources are scarce. With this influence comes a responsibility to report accurately and uphold ethical standards that reflect factual and cultural truths. Misnaming Persian as 'Dari' disregards these values and perpetuates a misunderstanding that echoes global misrepresentation of Afghanistan's rich linguistic diversity. It is crucial that the BBC rectifies this error to provide a truer representation of Afghanistan's cultural heritage.
We call on the BBC to take immediate action to rename its "BBC Dari" service to "BBC Persian" in its Afghanistan coverage. This change would not only honor the historical and cultural significance of the Persian language but also support the identity and heritage of millions of Persian-speaking Afghans. By doing so, the BBC would affirm its commitment to cultural accuracy and ethical reportage.
Join us in urging the BBC to make this necessary change. Your signature can help preserve the integrity of Persian linguistic identity in Afghanistan. Please sign and support this cause for cultural truth and historical accuracy.
