Coronado Demands State of Emergency for Toxic Sewage Crisis

Coronado Demands State of Emergency for Toxic Sewage Crisis
The Issue
Coronado City Council needs to defend us from the sewage crisis.
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the city council of Coronado to take a stand and declare a state of emergency regarding Coronado's ongoing cross-border pollution crisis.
Coronado citizens demand action. The mayors of all eighteen cities in San Diego County, the cities of Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, San Diego, the County of San Diego, and the Port of San Diego have all taken a united stand against the toxic sewage crisis by declaring a state of emergency, and requesting the Governor of California declare a state of emergency. While Coronado has chosen a "resolution” to address this crisis, we, the citizens of Coronado, California, believe it is insufficient to end this crisis and call upon our elected leadership to join our surrounding communities in an official state of emergency.
Every day we breathe polluted air and waters, while we are continually subject to beach closures with no ending in sight from cross border pollution. The toxic sewage has closed our beaches for more than 80% of the last two years, including two entire summers. The Sewage Crisis continues to affect public health and damages our tourism and local economy. More than 100 BILLION gallons of sewage have poured into our oceans and beaches since 2018.
We call on Coronado to join forces with our neighboring affected communities to request a state of emergency from our Governor and our President by declaring Coronado's own state of emergency. While we acknowledge the symbolic nature of this declaration, we need your help and acknowledgement of the serious nature of this moment in Coronado history and your role in its remedy.
The Coronado city council emergency declaration will add momentum to the solution through diversion of the Tijuana River using the Army Corps of Engineers and other emergency measures possible only through a Presidential emergency declaration. We call upon you to act now to preserve the health and economy of our community.
