Construct Underground Walkways for Safe Australian Wildlife Passage

Construct Underground Walkways for Safe Australian Wildlife Passage
The issue
I am an animal lover and advocate who feels powerless seeing the avoidable tragedies on our roads - innocent creatures maimed and killed just trying to cross from one side to the other. Imagine the mothers and their young, bravely venturing out, only to be fatally struck while desperately trying to reach the other side. The heartbreak only intensifies when I know that amongst these animals are those representing our National Emblem, and yet their peril evokes little concern.
As urbanisation repurposes their habitat, animals are forced onto our dangerous roads, resulting in significant casualties daily. Roadkill data from Tasmania's 'Save the Tasmanian Devil Program' revealed more than 300 animal deaths on state roads in just one month, an alarming statistic that unquestionably indicates a nationwide crisis. Preventable wildlife deaths are not only a pressing animal welfare issue, but they're also causing a potential ecological imbalance.
Building underground walkways under our major roadways is more than a compassionate action; it's a practical, sensible solution that both respects our wildlife and enhances road safety. There are examples of such initiatives being successful elsewhere. By emulating other countries such as Canada and the Netherlands, we can contribute to a more sustainable future. These countries have constructed hundreds of these so-called 'eco-ducts' that protect and preserve their native species effectively.
What message are we sending about ourselves as a society if we do not care enough to act on this issue? It's time to show that we value all life, and respect the creatures who proudly represent our national identity. Join me in urging our government to build underground walkways across our nation; these wildlife corridors can prevent unnecessary deaths and protect our beautiful creatures. Sign this petition to help us achieve our goal.
