Construct a Sound Barrier to Shield Our Community from Highway and Airport Noise

Construct a Sound Barrier to Shield Our Community from Highway and Airport Noise
The Issue
My life in our quiet, peaceful community has taken an unwanted turn. As our local airport has grown to become a national hub, the sound of planes taking off and landing has become a constant backdrop. The serene ambiance of my backyard has been replaced by ceaseless drone from above and from the nearby interstate, which has never been busier due to the population surge.
The infrastructure 'improvements' have brought in an overwhelming surge of light and sound pollution disrupting our lives day and night, impacting our well-being. The serene nights we used to enjoy are now filled with the glaring lights from the newly-installed light fixtures lining the interstate and airport vicinity.
Government agencies have reported that prolonged exposure to traffic and noise pollution can significantly affect physical and mental health. According to a study by the World Health Organization, noise pollution can lead to sleep disturbance, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive impairment among others (WHO, 2018).
We believe that the construction of a sound wall along the perimeter of our community adjacent to the interstate and airport can significantly mitigate these issues. In numerous studies, sound walls have been found to reduce noise by as much as 10-15 decibels, which achieves a halving of the perceived loudness (FHWA). Such a solution would allow us to regain the tranquility we used to enjoy in our homes, returning peace and quiet to our nights.
We understand that development and progress come with noise and disruption. However, it is imperative that these developments should not be at the expense of the health and well-being of citizens who have called this area home long before it became a bustling intersection.
Join us in urging our local government to prioritize the construction of noise reduction walls. Let's reclaim the quiet and peace in our community. Please sign this petition.
