The Issue

Born and raised in Kent, I am a proud Paralympic medalist. I currently swim at RTW Monson. Kent recently has produced not just me, but also another Paralympic swimmer and 1 Olympic swimmer. Despite these achievements, we continually face a significant challenge - the lack of proper training facilities within our county. Kent is one of the biggest Counties in area and population, so it doesn't make sense that we don't have access to a 50m pool in the county.

Presently, we have to travel outside Kent for 50m training, either to the London Aquatics or K2 Crawley. These 2 pools have been our only 2 options since covid due to Crystal Palace not reopening. Unfortunately, the current setup at K2 is fixed at 25m due to constant boom issues and hence unsuitable for our requirements. Pool time at both these locations comes at a premium and is often scarce. Moreover, the travel to these places is not just time-consuming, but also burdensome in terms of expenses. Sometimes it is quicker to go over to France to train in a 50m pool than it is to get to Crawley or Stratford, which is mad.

Such hurdles are increasingly a deterrent to the growing talent within Kent. Therefore, to foster further development and support the dreams of aspiring swimmers, we ask for a 50m pool to be constructed within Kent. This initiative will significantly lessen travel requirements, save on associated costs, allow for an increased amount of pool space for swimming lessons, and most importantly, provide swimmers with ample training time in a properly equipped facility.

If we are to outperform what we did in Paris 2024 as Paralympian's and Olympian’s in LA 2028 we need this investment not only in sport but also in our talent of tomorrow.

It's hard to believe that we are closing sport facilities (such as Folkestone sports centre) at a time we are trying to encourage people to get more active. This hits home hard, especially as a disabled person, a radiographer and a qualified swim teacher. Not only do we need more facilities, we need the correct facilities. Kent is one of the only counties in the UK that does not have access to a 50m pool.

Join us in our plea to promote sports in Kent and make this dream a reality. Please sign this petition and be a part of the change that will shape the future of swimming in Kent.
