Consider parent coaches for Division 1 & 2 at Norwood Flames
The issue
For many parents like myself, supporting our children’s passion for basketball goes beyond cheering from the sidelines. We are deeply committed to ensuring they have the best opportunities to develop their skills and thrive in a positive sporting environment. However, the Norwood Flames Basketball Club's current policy of excluding parent coaches from leading Division 1 and Division 2 junior teams prevents some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable individuals from contributing to their growth.
While the policy may have been designed to ensure objectivity and professionalism, it inadvertently dismisses the wealth of experience and enthusiasm that parent coaches can bring. Many parent coaches are not only volunteers but have extensive backgrounds in basketball. They are present at every game, understand the teams' dynamics, and are eager to contribute meaningfully.
The proposed change is simple yet impactful: allow parent coaches to apply for coaching roles in Division 1 and 2 teams on a case-by-case basis rather than applying a blanket restriction. This will enable the club to tap into the best available coaching talent regardless of their relation to the players, fostering an environment where skill and dedication are the primary criteria for selection.
Other successful sports clubs have adopted a more flexible approach, allowing them to benefit from a larger pool of applicants and ultimately find the best fit for their teams. There are numerous instances where dedicated parent coaches have led their teams to victory, achieving exceptional results due to their unique understanding of the players’ abilities and needs.
This petition does not suggest compromising on standards or qualifications but rather ensuring that every coaching candidate is evaluated on their own merits. By being open to considering parent coaches, the Norwood Flames can continue to promote a standard of excellence, diversity, and innovation within the club.
We sincerely urge the management committee of the Norwood Flames Basketball Club to consider this proposal for the benefit of our children and the future of the club. Let’s ensure that we are creating a pathway for nurturing talent based on capability and passion.
