Consider Cumbernauld for a Royal Charter as Scotland's 9th City

Consider Cumbernauld for a Royal Charter as Scotland's 9th City
The Issue
In the heart of Scotland, Cumbernauld stands at a crossroads. Once known as the hub for weary travellers journeying to Stirling, our Town has a Rich, albeit short, history that deserves recognition. The Queen herself graced us in 1958 to open the Town Centre, marking Cumbernauld as a space built with purpose for the overspill from Glasgow and nearby areas. Unfortunately, despite our historical importance, Cumbernauld has endured an undesirable reputation as "the worst town in Scotland," or even worse, "what's it called," but it's time to change the narrative.
With a population poised for growth and significant investments earmarked for a new Town Centre over the next 30 years, Cumbernauld can transform into a bustling urban centre worthy of city status. We envision a Cumbernauld that stands proud as the "City of Tomorrow," marking itself as a beacon of growth and innovation. The potential to become Scotland's ninth city is not just a dream—it is a testament to the resilience and vision of our community.
Importantly for the people who live here, city status and a Royal Charter would not simply be an honorary title—it's an opportunity to reinvent our reputation and attract new opportunities, investments, and visitors. This change would allow Cumbernauld to finally shed its negative perceptions and take its rightful place as a centre of culture, commerce, and community life in Scotland.
Our aspirations are not without precedent. Consider cities like Perth and Inverness, which were granted city status and have since flourished as vibrant urban centres supporting economic growth and improving quality of life.
As a Town with so much potential, we deserve the chance to step into the future with confidence. Cumbernauld has always been more than meets the eye, a place where history and future prospects intertwine. Now, with determination and the support of its residents, Cumbernauld can be recognized on the national stage as the best City in Scotland to be.
Join us in this journey and show your support. Let's make "Cumbernauld City" not just a dream, but a reality. Sign the petition today and help us achieve a Royal Charter and city status for Cumbernauld.
