Compel Electricity Companies to Replace Asbestos Backboards for Smart Meter Installation

Compel Electricity Companies to Replace Asbestos Backboards for Smart Meter Installation
The Issue
My flat, like many others, operates on Economy 7. With the RTS switch-off in June 2025, our heating and immersion heater won't function on Economy 7 without a new smart meter. However, the installation of this pivotal equipment is being hindered due to the asbestos backboard that our electric company refuses to change. Such companies demand the installation of smart meters but neglect the prerequisite changes necessary for a safe and effective upgrade.
Asbestos is a hazardous material and its handling poses severe health threats. The World Health Organization estimates that about 125 million people worldwide are annually exposed to asbestos at the workplace, leading to numerous health issues including lung cancer and mesothelioma (World Health Organization, 2021).
Besides being a mere convenience, smart meters are essential for a shift towards renewable energy and better energy management. They are crucial for national energy agendas and their wide adoption is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, in situations like ours, smart meters are vital for the basic functioning of our heating systems.
We urge electricity companies to take responsibility and replace these outdated and dangerous asbestos backboards. It should not be the consumer's burden to manage, especially when the change is compelled by the companies themselves. They must undertake the necessary steps for safe smart meter installation – for the health of their consumers and for a sustainable future.
Please, sign this petition to demand a safe and responsible transition to smart meters by electricity companies.
