EXTINCTION is defined as the termination of a species, the end of life, serious stuff.
The issue
If we knew that human life was to become extinct, what would we do...act swiftly and decisively or procrastinate and waste time?
Right now, in 2021, animal species are becoming extinct at a faster rate than ever before, and we are suffocated by apathy, bureaucracy and greed when what we really need is action…and we need that action NOW to prevent their extinction.
Unlike all other mass extinctions on earth, which were the result of events outside of our control like meteor impacts and volcanism, this current mass extinction is most likely being caused by human behaviour and is directly correlated to human activities like land clearing, over hunting, overfishing and pollution.
One animal species that is on the cusp of extinction because of our human activity is the Sumatran Tiger, in my opinion, the Sumatran Tiger is one of the most beautiful, symmetrically astonishing, and wonderfully colourful animal species…but more on that later…
Let’s first understand the magnitude of the destruction that we are wreaking on Planet Earth and Mother Nature.
On a global scale, in 2020 alone, humans cleared the native vegetation and habitat equivalent to 122,000 km2.
For context, this is equivalent to more than 17 million soccer fields, or two times the size of Tasmania, or 65% of South America, or 50% of Japan, or 20% of France.
This happened in 2020 alone.
Land clearing involves the removal of native vegetation and habitats, including the bulldozing of native bushlands, forests, savannah, woodlands, native grasslands and the draining of natural wetlands for the purpose of replacing it with agriculture farming and mostly steered by the wants of the modern human race.
When we clear land, all animals living within that habitat are displaced or die and the ecosystem is disrupted forever.
It is also causing soil and water contamination and associated pollution.
Some of this land clearing is to enable the planting of Palm Oil Tree plantations.
Palm oil is the planet’s most widely produced vegetable oils. It is the oil derived from the fruit of the palm oil tree. It is found in everything from food to cosmetics.
Palm oil, and derivatives of palm oil, is found in 50% of the world’s packaged foods...it’s found in chips, crackers, ice cream, candy, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and cosmetics
Deforestation for the establishment of palm oil plantations is responsible for habitat loss for threatened and endangered species.
Orangutans’ population has decreased by 50% in the past 60 years, because 80% of their natural habitat has been destroyed. They are bordering on being critically endangered.
Other animal species impacted and endangered by forest clearing are the Asian elephant, Asian Tiger, and the Sumatran Rhinoceros.
The Sumatran Tiger could easily be next, 33% of the Sumatran Tiger population have become extinct in the three years to 2020, habitat loss is one of the two main reason why the Sumatran tiger’s population is decreasing so rapidly.
WE NEED TO TAKE ACTION NOW…

Demand that Palm Oil plantations stop operating at the expense of rainforests by applying stringent production criteria to all stages of palm oil manufacture.
• Define agreed practices for sustainable palm oil production through our voice being heard in international groups of palm oil producers, palm oil buyers, and environmental and social groups
•Demand that companies use certified sustainable palm oil in the products they make and sell
. Provide government incentives to ensure manufacturers are certified to sustainably operate as part of this industry and provide financial research and development incentives to discover a sustainable alternative to Palm Oil
