At present Coles Supermarkets use a large amount of single-use plastic packaging. Reducing the amount of plastic used reduces the amount going into landfill, reduces the damage to our environment and also reduces the amount of oil and gas used to produce the plastic. 

Coles is such an important player in the supermarket sector in Australia that even small change could have a large effect, on their own products and those of suppliers. Other supermarkets such as Woolworths and ALDI are already taking steps to improve their environmental performance, and Coles should fall in line too.

What do we want Coles to do?

1. Substitute non-plastic alternatives such as paper/cardboard in Coles brand products. Where this is not possible for raw meat/fish, substitute food safe recyclable products (codes 1-5)
2. Stop other producers providing products in plastic packaging to Coles
3. Provide paper alternatives within the fresh fruit and vegetable section for customers, and place reusable produce bags in this section for sale
4. Sell only fabric shopping bags or PP woven recycled plastic bags at the point of sale and checkouts, not the thin type currently available
5. Provide bulk options in store where people can bring their own containers or use paper/reusable produce bags
6. Encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags
7. Stop producing plastic toys as part of children's collectible promotions
