Closed Captions In Cinemas
The issue
Hi, my name is Sarah Kocur, I am Hard of Hearing 95% in the left ear and 55% in the right ear and this is my story.
Have you ever went to the cinemas and asked at the counter for a CaptiView? It is a device that you bring into the cinema and insert into a cup holder and adjust to your liking, and it shows words, allowing people with any troubles hearing to enjoy the movie like everyone else. Whenever I go to the movies I ask for a CaptiView and I get ready for the movie, I set up the CaptiView and the arm bends over a lot and I have to readjust the device several times which can be annoying and distracting you from the movie. Also the device doesn't work whenever I use it, I even ask the employee to help and she/he set it up, and I wait for the movie to start and I wait and I wait and the captions doesn't work. It's frustrating because I miss half the movie.
So that's the first issue.
On to the second one, is the Open Caption availability 1-2 times per week, which is not enough screening time and for people who are HOH/Deaf, It's inconsiderate for them to wait longer or have to change their schedule. I want to ask for more screening time availability timing, more than 2-3 times per week. I prefer for there to be more sessions, therefore, I can choose what ever time that suits my schedule so I don't have to adjust and sacrifice things to simply watch an accessible movie.
