The Issue
As a lifelong resident of Sutton Coldfield, I've always cherished the sense of community and safety that our town provides. However, recent developments concerning the Ramada Hotel have shaken our peace. My friends, family, and neighbours no longer feel safe, and the sense of unease grows with each passing day.
The Home Office has converted the Ramada Hotel in Sutton Coldfield into a site for processing asylum applications. While we understand the importance of offering assistance to those in need, the current use of this hotel is creating more harm than good. It has become a focal point for various safety concerns that are affecting our community directly.
Recent incidents reported include a tagged asylum seeker residing at the hotel, multiple police visits due to internal and external antisocial behaviour, and fraudulent activities involving local residents' addresses. These matters have understandably sparked fear, anger, and distress among us.
From the outset, Sutton Coldfield's residents have consistently opposed the use of the Ramada Hotel for asylum accommodation. Despite our efforts to communicate our concerns, they have largely been overlooked. The current situation places a troubling burden on both the community and the displaced individuals seeking refuge.
Placing vulnerable individuals in the heart of a small town without adequate supervision, support services, or infrastructure is not only reckless but also puts pressure on our already stretched local services. Importantly, we are unaware of who these individuals are or the potential risks they could pose. This lack of transparency and the government's actions feel both irresponsible and reckless.
Additionally, the escalating community tensions are deeply concerning. The people of Walmley and Sutton Coldfield have carried more than their fair share of the weight related to the ongoing illegal immigration crisis. It is unjust, and it cannot continue.
We formally urge Parliament and the Home Secretary to take the following actions:
1. Permanently close the Ramada Hotel as a site for asylum accommodation.
2. Stop the practice of placing asylum seekers in unsuitable hotels located in small towns and rural areas.
3. Require proper consultation with local councils before placing people in any area.
4. Avoid rehousing individuals in HMOs or any other types of accommodation within our community.
It is vital that these steps are taken to prevent further risk and to ensure the safety and unity of our community. Please sign this petition to demand urgent government action and to put an end to this situation before more harm occurs.
