The Issue

As a student attending school in Prince William County Schools (PWCS), it's frustrating to see other counties in the DMV area observing closures or switching to virtual learning during a code green, red, or orange alert, while we are given only a two-hour delay. This disparity in response not only creates an inconsistency in educational standards but also undermines our need for safety, well-being, and the opportunity to catch up on our academic responsibilities.

In the DMV region, it is common practice for counties to close schools and transition to virtual learning during certain alerts to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and staff. For instance, Fairfax County, Alexandria City, and Arlington County regularly take such measures. These proactive steps help reduce stress, enable students to catch up on work, and ensure that everyone is safe from potential adverse weather conditions or other situations that may pose a threat.

According to the National Weather Service, code green, red, and orange alerts are issued when specific environmental hazards or severe weather conditions are predicted, posing a significant safety risk to commuters including students and school staff. Delaying school operations by only two hours does not mitigate these risks adequately.

Considering the importance of student safety, academic performance, and overall well-being, it is time for PWCS to align with other county practices in the DMV region. By closing schools or implementing virtual learning during these codes, PWCS can prevent unnecessary risks and allow students to maintain a balance between safety and academic obligations.

Therefore, we urge PWCS to adopt a clear policy that instructs closure or the transition to virtual learning during code green, red, or orange alerts. This alignment will not only standardize our response but also affirm PWCS's commitment to the safety and educational needs of its students.

I kindly request your support by signing this petition to prompt PWCS to reconsider and adapt its policies for the benefit and safety of all its students.
